(Kansas City) The Kansas City Royals signed former all-star pitcher Matt Harvey to a minor league contract.
The Royals announced the news on Tuesday, ahead of their game against the Detroit Tigers.
The 31-year-old Harvey struggled to regain the form that made him one of the key elements of the New York Mets when they appeared in the World Series against the Royals in 2015.
Harvey, a right-hander, posted a 3-5 record and a 7.09 earned-run average in 12 starts with the Los Angeles Angels last year. The previous season, he had made 28 starts with the Mets and Cincinnati Reds.
In 2013, Harvey was named to the All-Star Team. Two years later, he helped the Mets to the World Series, having returned to the game following a Tommy-John-type surgery.
Since then he has been unable to register a winning season and has struggled to stay healthy.
